Foreigners see “Cordialement” at the bottom of an email and think: how warm, how cordial, what a lovely country. This is a mistake. It is the email equivalent of a man slowly removing his glasses.
The French professional email is a precise instrument. “Bien à vous” means we are fine. “Cordialement” means we are no longer fine. “Bien cordialement” means a folder has been opened with your name on it. And the email with no sign-off at all? That is not rudeness. That is a declaration of war, and HR is already in copy.
Learn the scale. Respect the scale. Never, under any circumstances, reply to a “Cordialement” with a smiley.
Survival rule
The shorter the sign-off, the longer the grudge.
